Two months old…

By miranda | September 23, 2008

At two months of age our gorgeous Sophie is quite the conversationalist. Just the other day when Mum came over for supper (which she ended up making, more on that later) Sophie greeted her by bringing her up to date on all that has been happening in her little life. She was very sure we understood her every word, and Mum was certainly listening intently and smiling lots! Sophie has this wonderful way of cooing and morphing through many facial expressions that makes you really know she’s putting meaning behind the sounds she makes. Her hair has grown back in the front (haha) and I definitely see hints of red/auburn in it now. Harry has put more pictures in the gallery, we have quite a few cause I wanted to get a really good one of her grinning, but everytime by the time I think of getting the camera the best of the smiles are over. Oh well, I’d rather be sitting there enjoying them than missing them while trying to find a camera.

On the wine-making front, we are plunging in with both feet. Our first year of doing it and we’re not just planning on one run, not two, but THREE different batches. Yes, once we got started, we both got a little excited. So the grapes we crushed a week ago were ready to be pressed on Sunday. That was the day we invited Mum over and everything took a little longer to do, so she ended up making the supper that we had promised to feed her, wonderful Nanny that she is. The grape pressing was fun, in fact all of the steps involved with making the wine from grapes have been fun and interesting, though the advice that we’re getting from local brewing stores is that if you want good quality homemade wine it really is best to work from a kit. The main reason being that the grapes that get shipped up to chilly Northern Edmonton from sunny California are likely to be the lowest quality grapes that had been passed over by four other people by the time they get to us. Unless we befriend a grower down there, or Dad buys himself that property in San Rafael we’re unlikely to get high-quality grapes here any time soon. So with that in mind, the other two carboys we’ll be filling are from a mid- and a high- qualitiy kits. Bottom line… we’ll need our friendly Edmonton neighbors to save us bottles over the next few months.

Re wine making, how red were your feet? I have a bunch of 1.5l bottles at home?

Ha ha. Yeah, I should have added that the “jumping in with two feet” was not litteral. Our hands did get quite stained from the destemming step, though.
