Alot has happened…

By miranda | July 15, 2009

… since Harry’s post spreading the news that our little one has become a biped. Over the past couple of weeks Sophie has really been getting the hang of walking, now she’s upright most of the time. She even ran across the room yesterday, our fearless one!

One of the reasons we’ve been incommunicado is that we were on holidays for a couple of weeks. After the test run camping for a few nights at Twin Lakes, we took off for the wilds of Southern British Columbia. We camped for a week and a half in Creston, Kaslo and Oliver, sandwiched between a stay with Jeannie, Ian and Colin in Kimberly and a visit with Nana and Grandad in Penticton. The weather was kind, neither too hot nor too wet. Everywhere we went there was fresh produce to be had. In Creston it was strawberries and peas, while Oliver and Osoyoos were in the middle of cherry season (hooray!!!). What a time to be in the area. Early on in the trip I had to warn Harry away from purchasing too much wine because I had to have room in the vehicle to bring home a couple cases of cherries. The wine aspect of the trip is a story unto itself, of course, with my oenophile husband. The main reason for touring the Okanagan area was to visit as many wineries as we could stand, which turned out to be many. Twenty-eight, to be exact. Early on in the tour I cautioned both of us to try to limit our purchases or we’d end up with ten cases to bring home. Good thing we put the brakes on, and only ended up with 136 bottles to transport (11 1/3 cases). By the end of the trip we were really really good at packing up the car. One of the neat discoveries from the trip was how much I liked some of the white wines, for if you know me, you know I much prefer the reds. Halfway through the trip we did an inventory and discovered that the wites and roses almost equaled the reds! That was another surprise, the comeback of the rose wine. Everywhere had a rose to taste, and many of them were really quite good. It was the drier roses that Harry and I gravitated towards, some of them were almost like really light red wines, very pleasing to the palate. Most of this lovely wine will have to sit for at least six months since Harry’s not supposed to touch it until I can partake (in all the tasting rooms I was a spitter). We have had a couple of people over since returning though, and couldn’t resist opening a couple of our treasures to share. For now, our cellar is well-stocked!

As for the soon-to-be-latest-arrival, Ziggy is treating me well. I’m feeling great and we were lucky enough to hear the heartbeat yesterday at our second midwife appointment. It’s such a great moment, that first sound of life.
